The president of France’s National Cinema Center (CNC), Dominique Boutonnat, is scheduled to appear in court on June 14 for sexual assault against his godson.
The godson accused his godfather of trying to engage in sexual acts in August 2020, including attempting to force a sexual act.
Boutonnat was initially accused of attempted rape, but the charge was later reduced to sexual assault.
Controversial Reinstatement
Despite the charges against him, Boutonnat was allowed to continue leading the CNC by the government in July 2022, sparking calls for his removal due to the ongoing legal proceedings and the nature of the accusations.
Actress Judith Godrèche has been vocal about urging Boutonnat’s removal, questioning the appropriateness of someone facing sexual assault allegations heading an organization responsible for regulating the film industry.
For Godrèche, having Boutonnat in a position of power sends the wrong message and undermines efforts to address sexual violence in the industry.
Adèle Haenel, another actress, also alluded to Boutonnat when she announced her retirement from acting, criticizing those who shield individuals accused of sexual misconduct.
The CNC plays a crucial role in the French film industry by funding and regulating the sector.
Efforts are being made within the CNC to tackle issues of sexual harassment and assault through mandatory training programs for industry professionals.
Concerns were raised within the film community about Boutonnat’s influence on the industry’s artistic integrity and financial sustainability following his appointment in 2019.
The announcement of his trial date comes amidst a wave of allegations of sexual misconduct in the film industry.
