Why Proton Unlimited is well worth its price. While the free version of Proton Mail is already feature-rich, the Unlimited offer goes even further, for a very reasonable price. Here’s why.
If you’re looking for an alternative to free email services like Gmail, I highly recommend Proton Mail. The service is completely free and offers a high level of privacy for an email platform. Additionally, the service is linked to other Proton services such as its VPN, password manager, and even a calendar service, all focused on respecting your privacy. But where Proton stands out is with its monthly subscription.
With all the features already included in the free version, spending €12.99 per month (or €9.99 for annual payment, or even €7.99 for biannual payment) for Proton Unlimited may not seem necessary. However, if online privacy is one of your top priorities, the additional features of Proton Unlimited are well worth the cost. And if you don’t find all the features useful, Proton offers some of its services as standalone subscriptions.
What does Proton offer for free?
By default, signing up for Proton’s services gives you key features such as end-to-end encryption, encrypted contact details, and multiple calendars. You also get 5 GB of encrypted end-to-end storage on Proton Drive (more private than Google Drive). VPN features are also available (but limited to one device), giving you access to mid-range VPN servers (in terms of speed) in five different countries. Proton also has its own password manager, Proton Pass. All of this for free.
So many privacy features in emails
One of the most valuable aspects of Proton Unlimited is the ability to use up to three custom email domains in Proton Mail. This allows you to have up to three completely personalized addresses. You can manage up to 15 different email addresses in your Proton account, perfect for separating different aspects of your life. Unlimited messages, folders, labels, and custom filters (all of which are limited in the free version).
Proton Unlimited also gives you unlimited aliases to conceal your address. This way, no third-party site will know your personal address. Apple offers something similar, but it only works if you sign up on an Apple device. Proton’s solution is accessible from Windows, macOS, iOS, Android, etc.
Calendars increase from 3 to 25 with Proton Unlimited, and you can share yours with others. Proton Drive goes up to 500 GB with the basic Unlimited offer, but the most interesting aspect is Proton VPN (we’ll get back to that later).
If you don’t need all of that, you can opt for Proton Mail Plus. For €4.99 per month, you get 15 GB of storage, 10 custom email addresses, and a personal domain. You’ll also have unlimited folders, labels, and filters, but not Proton VPN.
Proton VPN is much better with the Unlimited offer
If Proton VPN is one of the best free VPNs currently available, Proton Unlimited offers full access to the fastest servers in over 90 countries. You have access to P2P/BitTorrent, NetShield protection, Tor via VPN, a VPN accelerator for higher speeds, a DNS.
Proton Unlimited VPN is a secure way to hide your IP address when sharing files or downloading. It includes P2P and BitTorrent protection, NetShield to block ads and trackers, access to Tor via VPN for safer browsing, and customizable DNS for extra protection.
Every site you visit tries to track you, which is why using a VPN is essential. While the free Proton VPN is good, Proton Unlimited VPN offers even more features.
Secure Storage and Native 2FA with Proton Pass
Proton Pass provides two password vaults, 10 email aliases, and the ability to share it with two other users. With Proton Unlimited, you get up to 50 vaults, unlimited aliases, native two-factor authentication (2FA), and the option to share with up to 10 users. If you’re only interested in Proton Pass, you can choose Pass Plus for €4.99 per month (or €1.99 per month with an annual subscription).
New Updates with Dark Web Monitoring
The latest update to Proton Unlimited introduces dark web monitoring to alert you if your personal information is found in that area of the web. This helps you regularly check that your data hasn’t been leaked.
Proton Mail’s free version already offers rich features without compromising privacy. Proton Unlimited provides additional tools for those seeking extra security and privacy features.
