The Spider-Verse is expected to allow Sony Pictures Animation to introduce Supaidāman in the new Spider-Man animated film.
A New Variant of Spider-Man in the Spider-Verse
The upcoming animated film from Sony Pictures Animation, Spider-Man: Beyond the Spider-Verse, presents a unique opportunity to integrate a version of Spider-Man that has been surprisingly absent from previous installments of the franchise. Spider-Verse has established itself as one of the most important in the comic book cinematic universe, garnering numerous awards, including two Oscar nominations and a statuette.
The Japanese Spider-Man May Make an Appearance
One of the early live-action adaptations of the iconic web-slinger, the Japanese Spider-Man (also known as Supaidāman), could finally make his debut in the Spider-Verse. This version was first aired between 1978 and 1979, totaling 42 episodes. Despite limited presence since then, one of the franchise’s key producers, Phil Lord, teased this character a few years ago, hinting at his appearance in Spider-Man: Beyond the Spider-Verse.
A Japanese Version That Fits Into the Spider-Verse
One of the great attractions of the Spider-Verse films is the large number of Spider-Man variants that emerge in the story. Whether they have a major role or a fleeting cameo, seeing these different versions, whether popular or obscure, is one of the foundations and appeals of the franchise. The unique abilities and varied animation styles in the Spider-Verse are among the driving forces of the films, and Supaidāman fits perfectly into this concept.
Supaidāman is quite different from the classic Peter Parker. The titular hero, Takuya Yamashiro, received his powers from an alien named Garia who died shortly after granting him unique abilities, various gadgets, and vehicles. His main enemies all come from an organization called the Iron Cross Army, led by Professor Monster.
What Do We Think?
The presence of the Japanese Spider-Man in the Spider-Verse would be a breath of fresh air. This variant, although different from Peter Parker, retains the essence of the character. It is further proof of the richness and flexibility of Marvel’s character. Its inclusion would only add to the diversity and appeal of the Spider-Verse franchise.
