A second season for The Lord of the Rings by Amazon

To the disappointment of some fans, who would have preferred Amazon to scrap the first season and start over, there is now a second season of The Lord of the Rings: The Rings of Power. And yes, the first trailer is already here, confirming its release on August 29.

Epic battles and frightening creatures

As a big fan of The Lord of the Rings, even though the first season didn’t seem essential to me, I appreciate the direction things are taking in this second season. There are promises of epic battles and unsettling creatures, as Sauron, sometimes in his “pleasant” form and sometimes in his frightening appearance, begins to tighten his grip on Middle-earth. Also noteworthy is the special attention given to the making of the rings of power in collaboration with Celebrimbor.

Three episodes for a first wave

Amazon announces that the first three episodes will be available on August 29, with the rest following each week. Like the first season, this one will consist of a total of eight episodes.

A new film in the works

Furthermore, less than a week after this announcement, Warner Bros. Discovery revealed plans for a new film The Lord of the Rings, set to be released in theaters in 2026. Provisionally titled The Hunt for Gollum, this film will feature and be directed by Andy Serkis, who portrayed Gollum in Peter Jackson’s The Lord of the Rings and The Hobbit trilogies.

A distinct universe, yet some similarities

Although this film is rooted in Jackson’s created universe, the Amazon series remains a separate entity. However, a few similarities exist: for example, the filming of the first season of The Rings of Power took place in New Zealand, like Jackson’s films, and Howard Shore, the composer of the six Middle-earth films, wrote the main theme for the Amazon series.

And to top it off, Lego has just released an incredible Barad-Dur set. A busy week for the Lord of the Rings universe!
